This bone and Ivory model was made by French craftsmen taken prisoner in the Napoleonic wars 1793 to 1815. Napoleon introduced a ruthless conscription which embraced skilled craftsmen without reserve. Among these were the ivory carvers from  Dieppe and West Africa, Breton jet-carvers, and the renowned French Jewellers and watchmakers, many of these men were in the ships captured by the British.
